View larger. | Fighting Styles Success in mixed martial arts in real-life is all about a fighter's ability to combine different aspects of various fighting disciplines to his advantage when inside the octagon and that is exactly what players will need to do in UFC 2009 Undisputed. Ideally these combination of disciplines are used to devastate an opponent, but if used wisely they can also be used to frustrate and neutralize the power and tactics of a stronger fighter who can't be knocked out. UFC 2009 Undisputed features the six international fighting disciplines that are used in the UFC. These six fall into two categories, striking disciplines and grappling disciplines, and include: Striking disciplines: Western Boxing (Boxing) - Boxing relies on complex foot maneuvers and quick jabs to mount a powerful offense. Kick Boxing - Kick Boxing is a fighting style that integrates boxing punches with a variety of martial art kicks. Muay Thai - Also known as 'Thai Boxing,' Muay Thai utilizes elbows, knees and low kicks often from the clinch position. Grappling disciplines: Wrestling - The oldest sport known to man, Wrestling consists of taking down your opponent using hand-to-hand maneuvers. Judo - Judo is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes on throwing your opponent and immobilizing him with grappling moves. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Derived from Kodokan Judo, BJJ utilizes joint locks and choke holds to allow smaller/weaker combatants to defeat bigger, stronger opponents. Gameplay Gameplay in UFC 2009 Undisputed is designed to be the most authentic representation of mixed martial arts in a video game to date. To do this the game utilizes the six fighting disciplines to help the player develop actual strategies used by UFC fighters. Each playable fighter is initially assigned one striking and one grapple martial discipline. The fighting strategies that come out of these make up a player's 'standing game' and 'ground game,' with the standing game reflecting your striking discipline and ground game your grapple. The standing game consists of utilizing the precision of your striking style to breakdown your opponent with quick combos, kicks from the perimeter or knees and elbows in the clinch. After these have done their work you unleash your power and go for the knockout. The ground game on the other hand consists of knocking your opponent off balance, taking him down to the canvas and there going for a tap out via submission hold or securing dominant position and pounding away until it is over. In developing a ground game players will learn to use UFC 2009 Undisputed's 'ultimate fighting control' game mechanic. This innovative control system initiated through the right stick, allows players to transition their fighter while on the ground from one advantageous physical position to the next. This control is available to both combatants while on the ground, so as players seek for optimal positioning they must also beware of counter moves. Regardless which strategy is preferred, players must acknowledge both. Although players may feasibly survive and even progress for a while using just the standing or ground game, sooner or later the in-game competition will demand the development of both. Roster of Fighters A big part of UFC 2009 Undisputed's dedication to realism is its extensive list of playable UFC fighters and other in-game characters familiar from the real-life world of Ultimate Fighting. The game features 80 headline fighters, 16 from each of the UFC's five weight divisions. AND IT IS ALL OVER!!!

Wow, this game is fun. I'll make this short and sweet. But in case you just read the pros and cons, I'll say this now: The game is fun. The minor gripes I have are nothing compared to the fun to be had in this game, which is why it is a 5 star.
What I didn't like:
-Can't go through career mode with any of the fighters. Have to create your own character, which is fun, but I wanted to go through as Machida.
-No intros, by that I mean the entrances. Bruce Buffer announces you, but that's about it.
-Just 3 fighting styles for striking and grappling.. I was looking forward to fighting with Machida's one-of-a-kind shotake karate style.. but it is non-existent. They just have him as Kickboxing.
What I did like:
-The gameplay and fighting mechanics are so deep and well done.. there are just so many things you can do in so many different situations.
-Graphics are beautiful to look at. The hit-detection is spot-on, and you can get bruised up just about anywhere. It's damn pretty.
-The commentary is pretty well done here.. music is ok. But it doesn't take away from the game at all.
-Just a blast to play with friends.
Like I said before, the pros of this game VERY much outweigh the cons. There are room for improvements, but for being the first installment for what looks to be a successful series to come, it's an extremely promising foundation to build upon. I love this game. |
It's all about the challenge...

I enjoyed this game for several reasons (most listed in other reviews), but most importantly, I enjoyed the challenge of finding a way to beat someone in a different manner every time you fight. I'll use my son for an example. He'll choose a kick boxer every time and just kick you in the head for a quick knockout (very effective). So instead of just getting mad, I've had to explore each fighting style and learn how to counter his kicks. The end result...awesome matches! It's the classic button masher verses the technical fighter, you never know how it's going to turn out, but you always know that you at least have a chance to win no matter what style you use.
I've really enjoyed this game, and like most fighting games, playing against your friends is a blast. That perfectly timed shot that knocks out your opponent when you know you're behind on points never gets old....

Excellent game, but not perfect

As soon as I got this game, I opened it up as fast as possible to play it on my PS3. Just seconds into my very first fight, I was very impressed with the smooth graphics and excellent attention to detail when it comes to the numerous characteristics that come into play in MMA. The gameplay is on point and challenging enough to keep me from getting bored. The striking is pretty basic and easy to learn, but ignoring the ground game will be disastrous. Just like in reality, an MMA fighter must be solid in striking and on the ground to have any real success, otherwise the losses will stack up rapidly.
The most glaring flaw that bugs me has to do with the career mode--your fighter does not age and is eventually forced to retire. I was a bit stunned that with all the impressive attention to detail that THQ would allow something like this to slip through the cracks.
Nevertheless, the few bugs are miniscule when you look at the game as a whole, but I do hope THQ fixes them. As the first installment of UFC games for the PS3, this is a highlight reel knockout. |
Great game

| Game is sick--no doubt--its made well--with loads of fighters--and the gameplay is not cheap at all--its realistic and the graphics rock--great tutorial will get you rolling and after getting to know the controls the game is a blast--arguably best fighting game to date--I would highly recommend it- |

| Despite what people say I think this game was very fun to play. The game play is really well built and the fighting moves are fun to use when going up against another fighter. when playing career mode you have to create your own fighter and decide what type of fighting style your going to use and weight class your going to be in. The graphics are amazing showing cuts and bruises when someone is getting pounded in the face or bruises due to kicking someone a lot in the body. When you knock someone out their mouth peice goes flying with spit flying out of their mouth. When the fighters start getting tired they start to sweat and their energy starts to slow down which makes your or your opponent vulnerable for a knockout. Like in realy UFC takedowns and submissions are kind of difficult due to the opponents fighting style and how skilled they are. As you rank up through the UFC stats you will start to fight the famous fights of the octagon which is tough and fun. There is also an online mode where you can either play your created fighter or use a UFC fighter. Overall, this game is really fun and I will continue to replay this game. |
